Levitra (vardenafil) is an FDA-approved oral prescription medication for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. Levitra works in the same way by blocking the enzyme called phosphodiesterase-5 or PDE5. By blocking this enzyme the muscles in the penis can relax which allows for more blood flow and with the proper sexual stimulation can lead to an erection. It was developed by Glaxo and Bayer as a rival to Viagra®. Levitra (vardenafil) was submitted to the FDA for approval in September of 2001. The product received full release approval in August 2003 for USA.
Levitra has given new hope to many men who find the treatment more effective than Viagra® or Cialis. Most men require one Levitra 10 mg tablet per day. Owen Collins, Bayer`s director of medical sciences in the UK, said reliability rates for Levitra were 90 percent for most men taking the drug for the first time and on successive occasions. Levitra is effective for up to 4 hours longer than Viagra. and lasts, about 6 to 8 hours.
In trials involving 1,020 men with erectile dysfunction problems who took the drug for up to one year, the average success rate in maintaining an erection improved from 14 percent to 82 percent using a 10 mg dose and from 16 percent to 86 percent using a 20 mg dose.
